Cody Robbins Wins STSS ‘Cajun Region’ Inaugural with Last-Lap Pass at Chatham

CHATHAM, LA – In a career that has produced more than 60 victories, Cody Robbins was missing something.

A big check.

On Saturday night at Chatham Speedway, Robbins won the inaugural Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco ‘Cajun Region’ Modified event in thrilling fashion.

Starting eighth, Robbins cut through the field and passed race-long leader Tommy Rascoe on the final circuit of the 20-lap feature, taking home the oversized check from Victory Lane at Jerry Hobson’s quarter-mile oval.

Robbins has a long resume in a variety of divisions around his Mansfield, La., home including Sprint Cars, Late Models, Factory Stocks and more. Robbins opted to compete with the STSS Cajun Region for ’21 and was making just his second-ever start in a Northeastern-style Modified.

The opening lap of the historic STSS event saw a pair of incidents necessitating complete restarts. Rascoe, who started fourth, emerged with the lead while Robbins swiftly climbed to second.

Lap after lap, corner after corner, Robbins’ No. 7 stalked Rascoe’s No. 9R, looking to the inside.

Ultimately, slower traffic on the last circuit changed the race’s complexion. Rascoe’s car, while negotiating a lapped car, pushed off the bottom and Robbins took advantage, diving through the inside to take the top spot.

“I was hoping we were going to catch the lapped traffic,” Robbins said. “I saw his wheels turn to the left and I knew he (Rascoe) was going to push. I had just enough room to get under him.”

Robbins earned $1,175 for the win: $1,000 from the posted payout, $100 from Shed Road Auto Parts (Bossier City, La.) as the Hard Charger and $75 as the highest-finishing driver with an APE Engines (Natchitoches, La.) decal.

Converse, La.’s Rascoe, who competed with the STSS during the ‘Sunshine Swing’ in Ocala, Fla., back in January, settled for second. Caleb Dillard of Many, La., started sixth, got shuffled back early and drove forward to third in the Tim Bates Painting No. 85. Greg Dillard of Robeline, La., ran inside the top-five for the entire distance, finishing fourth and Benton, La.’s Keith Badiali, who at one point was racing for the lead, finished fifth.

Heat winners were Badiali and Caleb Dillard.

Fourteen STSS Modifieds took part in the opening round of the Day Motor Sports (Tyler, Texas) point series. A year ago, just three cars signed in for the first event at Chatham, demonstrating the growth of the division in the Bayou State.

The next event for the ‘Cajun Region’ is set for Saturday, April 17 at Thunder Valley Speedway in Glenmora, La. Like “The Thunder Valley Speedway” on Facebook to learn more.

The entire program will move in its entirety back one week.

“With teams coming long distances to be part of this event and more than 60-percent chance of rain, we have decided to postpone until April 3,” Hobson said.

Modifieds will race for a $1,000 winner’s share plus an additional $75 for the highest-finishing car with an APE Engines sticker. $200 will be reserved to take the green flag.

Shed Road Auto Parts of Bossier City, La., has signed on to present a $100 cash Hard Charger Award to the driver advancing the most positions from the start of the main event to the finish.

Caleb Dillard Preparing for Short Track Super Series ‘Cajun Region’ Inaugural Saturday at Chatham

Written by Chris Moore

CHATHAM, LA – The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco prepares for a historic event this Saturday, March 27. The STSS ‘Cajun Region’ has its inaugural race at Jerry Hobson’s Chatham Speedway in Chatham, La.

Last November, series promoter Brett Deyo struck a deal with the Southern Super Modified Series to rebrand the group to continue the growth of Northeastern-style big-block/small-block Modified racing in the region.

It was announced at the STSS ‘Cajun Swing’ that the Southern Super Modified Series would become the STSS ‘Cajun Region’ in 2021.

Less than a week away from the history making affair, competitors and officials alike prepare with anticipation.

Among those preparing is Robeline, La.’s Caleb Dillard.

“Our body is on its way down; we’ve got to get it hung and I’m going to put the wrap on it, but we’ll be ready for Saturday,” Dillard said with excitement.

Dillard is expected to be one of the heavy hitters in the maiden voyage for the STSS ‘Cajun Region.’ Dillard grew up in a racing family, which includes his older brother – Cade Dillard – a regular on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and his father Greg Dillard, who also drives a Modified.

Caleb has even taken his older brother’s Late Model for a spin, but said of the Northeastern Modified: “these cars are the most fun to drive… I’m exactly where I want to be driving one of these racecars.”

Dillard will be driving Matt Sheppard’s 2020 Bicknell racecar that Chris and Tim Bates purchased at the end of last season.

“Every driver has their own feel for how they want the car to be. Sheppard’s setup will be a baseline for us, and we’ll tweak from there,” explained Dillard. “You can have a good car all race long, but it’s most important to have a good driver behind the wheel.”

Dillard and the rest of the Louisiana fleet are excited about the growth of the Northeast Modifieds in their area.

“This is going to be a good deal. I know there’s around five to 10 guys who are interested in racing with us and are just going to see how things go at the start of our season.”

Caleb has spent the last couple of seasons racing Pro-Mods, a division which features slick tires and narrower bodies than that of the Northeast Modifieds. Now Dillard and the rest of the STSS ‘Cajun Region’ set to debut themselves as a series this Saturday.

On March 27, pit gates open at 3 p.m.  Hot laps begin at 6 p.m., with racing at 7 p.m.

Pit admission is $35. Transponders are required for STSS Modifieds and rentals are available for $10.

Grandstand admission is $15. Kids 10 and under are FREE.

Milestone Short Track Super Series Cajun Region Opener March 27 at Chatham

CHATHAM, LA – Another milestone date for the Short Track Super Series (STSS) is set for Saturday, March 27.

The Short Track Super Series Cajun Region hosts its inaugural event at Jerry Hobson’s Chatham Speedway on the 27th of March, kicking off the series’ first year on the Bayou for Northeast-style Modifieds.

The Day Motor Sports point series begins at Chatham with a 25-lap main event preceded by 8-lap heat races. The event carries a rain date of Saturday, April 3.

Chatham has been a key player in the growth of the division in Louisiana. Last season, Hobson gave the Northeast drivers an opportunity to race in May during the COVID-19 restrictions in May with a pair of events won by Larry Wight and Matt Sheppard.

In November, the STSS made a trek to “the Boot” for the ‘Mods in the Marsh 75’ at Chatham and Sheppard walked off with a $20,000 payday.

Now, with the STSS taking the reigns of the former Southern Super Modified Series, continued growth is expected throughout the season. A successful pre-season Competitor Meeting in Shreveport, La., set the stage for solid car counts at ’21 events.

Short Track Super Series Cajun Region Launches with Competitor Meeting

SHREVEPORT, LA – History was made on Saturday afternoon in the Bayou State.

Northeastern-style Modified racers from Louisiana and Texas converged in Shreveport, La., for the first official Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Cajun Region event: a Competitor Meeting held at Shane’s Seafood & BBQ on Mansfield Road.

STSS founder Brett Deyo introduced Louisiana residents Chris and Tim Bates as the Series Directors for the first-year Cajun Region, a transition from the Southern Super Modified Series group.

A healthy congregation of racers took part in the informational gathering, which got underway with a traditional Louisiana Catfish lunch.

Deyo publicized an introductory 10-race point schedule with visits to Chatham (La.) Speedway, Sabine Motor Speedway in Many, La., and 171 Speedway in Leesville, La.

Jerry Hobson’s Chatham facility plays host to the inaugural race on Saturday, March 27. Hobson has been a staunch supporter of the division’s growth in the area.

Additional dates are in the works with a target of 12-13 points-paying shows.

The point season is currently scheduled to conclude on Oct. 9 at 171 Speedway.

Deyo outlined a dramatically increased pay structure for any event attracting 10 or more cars with $1,000 going to the winner, $750 for second and $200 just to take the green flag.

Tim Bates Painting announced a $3,000 contribution to the 2021 STSS Cajun Region point fund.

A $25 per-car, per-event payment from Day Motorsports of Tyler, Texas will fill out the point fund for the inaugural season. The fund will be distributed prior to the ‘post-season’ events Nov. 10-13.

The aforementioned ‘post-season’ will include the combined STSS and STSS Cajun Region ‘Cajun Swing’ with back-to-back races at Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La., on Nov. 10 and 11 ($4,000 to win Wednesday and $5,000 to win Thursday) before venturing to Chatham for Qualifying Night on Friday (Nov. 12) and the $20,000-to-win ‘Mods in the Marsh 75’ on Saturday (Nov. 13).

Deyo outlined the ’21 rules and procedures for the Cajun Region and answered questions for competitors on hand.

Seventeen memberships were filed at the meeting for teams planning to compete in the Cajun Region.
